A thermos typically consists of a double-walled structure, with two layers of stainless steel separated by a thin air gap or vacuum. This vacuum space acts as an excellent insulator because, in the absence of air or other gases, heat cannot easily transfer between the inner and outer walls of the bottle.

Vacuum insulation prevents heat conduction and convection, as both require the presence of a substance, such as air, to transfer heat.
